Map of Gran Canaria
There's three main areas people stay while on their holidays on the island, Playa del Ingles, Masapalomas and Puerto Rico.
For those returning to the island it's because they prefer that resort over the others, but for new visitors who would like some information before they visit, we'll have a look at all three.
And while Playa del Ingles, Masapalomas and Puerto Rico are the three favourite destinations on the Gran Canaria map, there are other villages and towns to be discovered as well.
One example is Puerto Mogan. Why isn't it as popular? Because it's not got as much holiday accommodation as other places you will find on a map of Gran Canaria - but it doesn't mean to say it isn't good. In fact many tourists who like Puerto Mogan would like it to stay the way it is, and perhaps not be highlighted on a Gran Canaria map at all!
Playa del Ingles
Located in the south of the island, this is the resort for you if you like your holidays to be in a fast moving cosmpolitan town, that has everything to offer a tourist for hotels, shopping, bars and restaurants with plenty of choice.
And because it's popular many of the tour operators who offer holidays on the island will be offering good price deals and last minute bargains - ideal for those who would like to get a week or two of sunshine in good accommodation at a bargain price.
A little like what many expect when they look at a Tenerife map in many ways.
Of all the resorts you see on the maps it's the biggest, and if you're from the UK the translation in itself suggest you're going to find plenty of bars and restaurants run by the British - Playa del Ingles means English Beach - and there is a good beach here, which gets pretty busy at times, especially in the peak summer months of July and August.
Masapalomas
If your holidays centre around the beach, Masapalomas is a good choice as there's around four miles of good beaches here to be found, including part of it which has been awarded a blue flag for cleanliness, safety and facilities.
While the resort can get busy, generally it's more peaceful and fair to say more upmarket than the more brash Playa del Ingles.
Again when you look at a map of Gran Canaria Masapolomas is in the south of the island. Many of the hotels have a good view of the sea.
It's a good family resort as there are water parks and other children orientated entertainments to be found not just in the town but closeby.
Like the other three main resorts the tour operators have a good choice of holidays here, and they offer last minute and all inclusive deals with some bargains to be had on a regular basis.
Puerto Rico
The final one of the three resorts most people choose when you take a look at a Gran Canaria map is Puerto Rico, which like the other two is in the south of the island.
The town has an excellent beach, which is more like a bay, and it's a great place for families who like to spend time by the sea.
It's a purpose built resort, and ideal for those who are having a family holiday, there's plenty to see and do but it's relatively quiet in the evenings although there are some all night bars, with a good amount of family friendly restaurants.
If it's a family holiday you're thinking of, of the three resorts Puerto Rico is often seen as a better location than Playa del Ingles and Masapolmas, and on the Gran Canaria map you'll see it's to the south-west.
The Quiet Town
Not everyone likes a lot of activities during the day followed by dancing the night away, and for those who do enjoy some peace and quiet Puerto Mogan could be a good option.
We mentioned before that some who take regular holidays in Puerto Mogan would rather it not be on a map of Gran Canaria at all, they want it to stay the way it is.
While peaceful, there's a surprising number of families who stay there, but if it's young children who like to be with Mum and Dad, there are some good accommodation choices where there are swimming pools and hotels which have organised activities during the day for children.
There's a nice marina with restaurants dotted around, and a good level promenade that makes it an easy stroll to and from the hotels. If you're after a relaxing holiday, it's an hour from the airport, but this is the place to look out for on a Gran Canaria map.
